PENELOPEIA - Antilla 30 Design #2042

Penelopeia (originally sailed under the name “Salka”) is an Antilla 30, manufactured by the Finnish boat builder AA Boats in 1976. She is Sparkman Stephens design # 2042.1 Originally designated for 1/2 ton IOR racing, she is based on the same design as the SHE 31B design #2042. The owner of AA Boats, Mr Eino Antinoja, purchased the rights to the design from brothers Derek and Simon Fitzgerald of South Hants Engineering, having the negotiations at the Thames Royal Yacht Club, purchase price being one hull manufactured by AA Boats. Originally sold as the S&S 6.6 and manufactured by AA Boats between 1971 - 72, the design was later developed into a more family friendly version called the Antilla 30 (1973 - 76). In total approximately 50 Antilla 30’s were manufactured by AA Boat.

Penelopeia has been owned by the current owner since 2007 and cruised mainly on the Gulf of Finland skippered by the owner or our son Lauri. She has the layout of the 4 berth version although in reality this is comfortable for two people. Penelopeia has proved to be safe, strong, seaworthy and in all aspects a reliable boat.

The boat has been painted (marine blue) and also otherwise completely refitted by the previous owner in 2004:

· Sail wardrobe (main sail, genoa and gennaker by WB Sails, Harken Furling System, lazy jacks)

· Engine (Nanni Kubota, 14 hp), ZF HBW gearbox

· Deck equipment (Lewmar/Harken)

· Sprayhood (MP Venekuomu), again renewed 2020

· Instruments (Raytheon ST60)

· Original tiller steering changed into wheel steering (Whitlock Cobra, Navico WP30 Wheel Pilot)

· Chart plotter and DSC VHF radio, both renewed again during last years (Garmin)

· Battery banks (3 x 84 Ah, Invac battery charger, shore power system)

· Heating (Webasto AT 2000)

· Waterheater (Isotemp)

· Top opening cool box (Isotherm SP) and gas stove with oven

· Jabsco marine toilet

The homeport of sy Penelopeia is Helsinki, Finland (SPS Yacht Club)

Translated from Finnish

The boat is better known in the history of Finnish sailing sport by the name Marjo 3, given by its original customer Keijo Petäjän. It was launched in 1973.

Eino Antinoja had already manufactured the same frame under the trademark S&S 6.6. (the number comes from the IOR metric). The boat was developed by making a completely new deck structure. The Antilla 30 has a larger open space than the S&S 6.6, but due to its higher superstructure the interior is slightly higher. There were also a few other technical modifications to the boat that allowed the foot to have a longer mast and a correspondingly greater sail area.

The alterations were designed by architect Keijo Petajä, the client of the boat. For his boat, he also designed a one-off interior that was built from mahogany plywood. Serialized Antillas come in many different interior variants, but most of them are made with reinforced plastic interior modules.

Marjo 3, curled by Keijo Petäjä, was the most successful Finnish half-tonne of its time. The boat had a very large sailboat made by Hood.

After Keijo Petäjä's death, the heirs sold the boat to the Hamilton sea captain Jarkko Kukkonen. The owners' express wish was to give the boat a new name and Kukkonen to cross it to Tungus. Tungu moved from the Kukkonen family in 1994 to their current owners, Ari and Vesa Mäkelä, and now our late father was also a member of the boat.

The boat has undergone a thorough overhaul, but its style and, where possible, equipment is still very original. Where technology has had to be renewed, we have tried to preserve style as much as possible. There is plenty of original movable storage, for example. all original Hood sails that came with the boat. Of these, the high-wind spinster and Storm fox are still in active use.

It was not until 2014 that the boat was fitted with Rullageno. Until 2000, the engine was the original Yanmar YSE 8 (but not the original), but has since been replaced with a more powerful 16hp engine.

At our disposal, Tungu is a passenger boat that has traveled not only the Finnish and Swedish archipelago, but also the Estonian coast, the Gulf of Riga and the Southern Baltic.

Vene tunnetaan Suomen purjehdusurheilun historiassa paremmin alkuperäisen tilaajansa Keijo Petäjän sille antamalla nimellä Marjo 3. Tämä on ensimmäinen Antilla 30 tavaramerkillä valmistunut vene. Se laskettiin vesille 1973.

Eino Antinoja oli valmistanut samaa runkoa jo aikaisemmin tavaramerkillä S&S 6.6. (numero tulee IOR mittaluvusta).

Muutokset suunnitteli veneen tilaaja arkkitehti Keijo Petäjä.

Siellä missä tekniikkaa on jouduttu uusimaan, olemme pyrkineet mahdollisimman pitkälti säilyttämään tyylin. Alkuperäistä irtaimistoa on runsaasti varastoituna mm. kaikki veneen mukana tulleet alkuperäiset Hood -purjeet.

Vasta 2014 veneeseen asennettiin rullagenoa.
