Shaula was built in 1971 (hull number 23). She was sold to the Netherlands in the same year known as Easy Rider. Hers home port was Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the owner was J.C.W. van Dam. At the same time, the boats name was changed to Shaula.
Shaula has been raced actively in the ”inner lakes” of the Netherlands. In the 44 years the boat was in Netherlands she has been continuously improved and repaired, for example, the new Perkins (36 hp) fitted in 1993. In 1996 Shaula got her second owner. New owner renewed navigation instruments and cooker. He also installed a water heater and a cooling unit. He also renewed the fresh water system completely. In 2003 Shaula got a new teak deck and some electronics. Also, the top-sides were painted. Winches have been replaced to new ones. In 2009 her bottom got an epoxy barrier coat treatment. She had 16 sails, four of them were spinnakers.
The third owner bought the boat in 2015 and sailed her to Parainen, Finland. During this ownership, she got a holding tank, heater (Webasto) and a new cover for the motor. Also, the interior was varnished. The boat was placed on sale in the summer of 2018 since the owner wasn’t a sailor and boat was a part of an exchange in a motorboat deal.
We bought the boat in 2018. Her current home port is Helsingfors Sägelsällskap (HSS). During the winter 2018-2019 the electronics and upholstery is updated.

S/y Shaula on valmistunut vuonna 1971 runkonumerolla 23. Samalla veneen nimi muuttui Shaulaksi.
Shaula kilpaili aktiivisesti ns. sisäjärvillä vuosia. Sitä kunnostettiin 44:n Hollannin vuoden aikana runsaasti, mm. Perkins 36 hp on vuodelta 1993.
Samoin kaikki puupinnat on kunnostettu. Myyntiin vene päätyi täällä, koska vene tuli Suomeen moottoriveneen vaihtokaupassa; uusi omistaja ei ollut purjehtija.
Me ostimme Shaulan loppukesällä 2018 ja se siirtyi Paraisilta kotisatamaansa Helsinkiin, Helsingfors Sägelssällskap HSS:lle syksyllä 2018. Talven aikana veneen elektroniikkaa päivitetään, samoin patjojen verhoilut.

I was one of those very fortunate people to have grown up in a yacht racing family. As a youth, in the 60’s and 70’s, one could not help but study all the newest designs, the best of which were created by Sparkman & Stephens. My understanding of sailing yacht aesthetics was formed by designs like Aura, Bay Bea, Yankee Girl, and Dora IV. So when the owner of Design 2254 asked me to consider purchasing his boat we were quick to investigate. At age 80 and in failing health, he was anxious to find someone willing to save his creation and give it a second life. The yacht was placed in heated storage in 1995 and untouched for 15 years.
We peeled back a visqueen cover, slid open the hatches, and discovered that she was put away with about five gallons of diesel fuel in the bilge. After shaking off escaping fumes, we got about our investigation. Diesel had migrated throughout the interior, saturating everything. In addition, we found that every single piece of hardware, all fixtures, all plumbing, wiring, and electronics were original. Despite all that, the framing and plate structure surveyed rather well. But in summary, we were faced with a long, difficult, and costly proposition. Our overall intent was to complete the project with reasonable correlation between cost and value. On that basis, we established a sequence of work covering demolition, then recovery, repair, and refit. The first phase involved fixing interior damage; Phase-2 included total refinish of the deck and sail handling hardware; Phase-3 involved refinishing the topsides and hull.
And the results speak for themselves, fantastic! You can read about the full restoration of ARISTEIA in the 2013 Sparkman & Stephens Association Year book - Available to download in the Members Area.

Golden Fleece, an S&S 41, was built in Durban, South Africa in 1974 for Gordon Neil, then Commodore of the Royal Natal Yacht Club. She is of cold moulded construction comprising three layers of diagonal 6mm marine ply.
She represented South Africa in the 1975 Admiral's Cup at Cowes and won Rothman's Week in Cape Town the same year. Other ocean races in which she successfully competed include the 1974 Agulhas Race, 1974 Vasco Da Gama Race, 1994 Mauritius/Durban Race, 1997 Da Gama Durban East London Race, 2000 Cape Town to Rio Race and many more. Bertie Read, the well known South African ocean sailor raced on her on many occasions. She is almost identical to Ted Heath's Morning Cloud, now renamed Opposition.
Found in a marina in Durban in September 1999 in a pretty sorry state. She had not been used for two or three years and was in need of some serious TLC. The current owner Michael Wheeler fell in love with her classic Sparkman & Stephens lines and bought her (against the advice of the surveyor!) with the intention of sailing her back to the UK. We carried out some essential work on her in Durban and in November sailed her to Cape Town over about five days, a challenging and rather unpleasant trip to say the least on a very nasty part of the South African coast. But it was satisfying to have achieved it with my (then) 24 year old son Jason and a couple of South African guys. We saw lots of whales, some of which were too close for comfort, and had some really bad weather.

The history of Swan 47/066 ”Tiger Lily”, ex. ”Alicadoo” (British flag), ex. ”Seaway Lady” (Swedish flag). Tiger Lily was launched in June 1982. She started her life under the Swedish flag and with the name Seaway Lady, homeport Gothenburg. She was sold already in November 1982 to an owner from Northern Ireland and had to change her name because the name Seaway Lady could not be registered under her new flag. Her new name became Alicadoo.
Between 1983 and 1989 Alicadoo did 6 transatlantic trips with Peter ”Stokey” Woodall as skipper. Her homeport was Vilamoura in Portugal. Alicadoo did also make several trips to the Azores from her homeport. On one of these trips, she became ”famous” as she was part of the filming of the RYA Yachtmaster video nr. 3.
Plans from classicswan.org
In August 1989 Alicadoo was bought by me. Our first sail together was from Vilamoura to Southampton, UK. It was late October so we started a life together with very rough weather. We arrived in Southampton under the Finnish flag and the new name of Tiger Lily. The flag and name were changed outside Cabo Finisterre in a force 10 storm.
During the years I have owned Tiger Lily I have made 6 transatlantic trips from Europe to the Caribbean. One of these was the cruise to celebrate Columbus 500 years since the discovery of the Americas. I have also visited Horta, Azores 4 times. Today, even with more than 130.000 nm on her log, Tiger Lily is in better shape than new after a big refit in 2008-2011.

Penelopeia (originally sailed under the name “Salka”) is an Antilla 30, manufactured by the Finnish boat builder AA Boats in 1976. She is Sparkman Stephens design # 2042.1 Originally designated for 1/2 ton IOR racing, she is based on the same design as the SHE 31B design #2042. The owner of AA Boats, Mr Eino Antinoja, purchased the rights to the design from brothers Derek and Simon Fitzgerald of South Hants Engineering, having the negotiations at the Thames Royal Yacht Club, purchase price being one hull manufactured by AA Boats. Originally sold as the S&S 6.6 and manufactured by AA Boats between 1971 - 72, the design was later developed into a more family friendly version called the Antilla 30 (1973 - 76). In total approximately 50 Antilla 30’s were manufactured by AA Boat.
Penelopeia has been owned by the current owner since 2007 and cruised mainly on the Gulf of Finland skippered by the owner or our son Lauri. She has the layout of the 4 berth version although in reality this is comfortable for two people. Penelopeia has proved to be safe, strong, seaworthy and in all aspects a reliable boat.
The boat has been painted (marine blue) and also otherwise completely refitted by the previous owner in 2004:
· Sail wardrobe (main sail, genoa and gennaker by WB Sails, Harken Furling System, lazy jacks)
· Engine (Nanni Kubota, 14 hp), ZF HBW gearbox
· Deck equipment (Lewmar/Harken)
· Sprayhood (MP Venekuomu), again renewed 2020
· Instruments (Raytheon ST60)
· Original tiller steering changed into wheel steering (Whitlock Cobra, Navico WP30 Wheel Pilot)
· Chart plotter and DSC VHF radio, both renewed again during last years (Garmin)
· Battery banks (3 x 84 Ah, Invac battery charger, shore power system)
· Heating (Webasto AT 2000)
· Waterheater (Isotemp)
· Top opening cool box (Isotherm SP) and gas stove with oven
· Jabsco marine toilet
The homeport of sy Penelopeia is Helsinki, Finland (SPS Yacht Club)
Model: Antilla 30

Translated from Finnish
The boat is better known in the history of Finnish sailing sport by the name Marjo 3, given by its original customer Keijo Petäjän. It was launched in 1973.
Eino Antinoja had already manufactured the same frame under the trademark S&S 6.6. (the number comes from the IOR metric). The boat was developed by making a completely new deck structure. The Antilla 30 has a larger open space than the S&S 6.6, but due to its higher superstructure the interior is slightly higher. There were also a few other technical modifications to the boat that allowed the foot to have a longer mast and a correspondingly greater sail area.
The alterations were designed by architect Keijo Petajä, the client of the boat. For his boat, he also designed a one-off interior that was built from mahogany plywood. Serialized Antillas come in many different interior variants, but most of them are made with reinforced plastic interior modules.
Marjo 3, curled by Keijo Petäjä, was the most successful Finnish half-tonne of its time. The boat had a very large sailboat made by Hood.
After Keijo Petäjä's death, the heirs sold the boat to the Hamilton sea captain Jarkko Kukkonen. The owners' express wish was to give the boat a new name and Kukkonen to cross it to Tungus. Tungu moved from the Kukkonen family in 1994 to their current owners, Ari and Vesa Mäkelä, and now our late father was also a member of the boat.
The boat has undergone a thorough overhaul, but its style and, where possible, equipment is still very original. Where technology has had to be renewed, we have tried to preserve style as much as possible. There is plenty of original movable storage, for example. all original Hood sails that came with the boat. Of these, the high-wind spinster and Storm fox are still in active use.
It was not until 2014 that the boat was fitted with Rullageno. Until 2000, the engine was the original Yanmar YSE 8 (but not the original), but has since been replaced with a more powerful 16hp engine.
At our disposal, Tungu is a passenger boat that has traveled not only the Finnish and Swedish archipelago, but also the Estonian coast, the Gulf of Riga and the Southern Baltic.
Original in Finnish:
Vene tunnetaan Suomen purjehdusurheilun historiassa paremmin alkuperäisen tilaajansa Keijo Petäjän sille antamalla nimellä Marjo 3. Tämä on ensimmäinen Antilla 30 tavaramerkillä valmistunut vene. Se laskettiin vesille 1973.
Eino Antinoja oli valmistanut samaa runkoa jo aikaisemmin tavaramerkillä S&S 6.6. (numero tulee IOR mittaluvusta).
Muutokset suunnitteli veneen tilaaja arkkitehti Keijo Petäjä.
Siellä missä tekniikkaa on jouduttu uusimaan, olemme pyrkineet mahdollisimman pitkälti säilyttämään tyylin. Alkuperäistä irtaimistoa on runsaasti varastoituna mm. kaikki veneen mukana tulleet alkuperäiset Hood -purjeet.
Vasta 2014 veneeseen asennettiin rullagenoa.
Model: Antilla 36

Marianna is presumably the ninth of the twelve boats in the Antilla 36 series built by Eino Antinoja in Inkoo Finland. The specialty of the Antilla 36 series is that the boats are all more or less individual, and none of them is completely in line with the design of the S&S 2227 C1. There is a difference between the drawings, at least for the rudder and the skeg, and especially for the ”spike” in the lower corner of the transom. There are also different variations of the rigging, the original design being a masthead rig. The first Antilla 36 hulls were solid laminate, and Marianna is probably the first to have in addition to the deck also the sides down to the waterline built as a sandwich structure with balsa core. According to heritage, Marianna also had a masthead rig initially, but it came down quite rapidly and was replaced by Seldens fractional 7/8 racing rig with inline spars and running backstays and check stays.
Marianna came into its current fifth owner’s possession in 2011, having been in the same ”family” since 1991. Marianna’s racing character has been tamed over the years, among others with roller furling genoa, full teak interior, and even now with a built-in refrigerator. Therefore the old lady is now slightly overweight with her 5100 kg mass. However, this does not bother as Marianna is nowadays in pure cruising usage, except for the occasional non-serious races of her Yacht Club Sindbad, in which she has still done reasonably well.
Marianna has been well cared for and maintained with love over the years, and her structures, with the exception of the rudder repair, have not needed to interfere. In the fall of 2018, the bottom of the boat was glass-blasted, and after new epoxy-coating, it is now ready to sail around for the next 40 years. The sailing fittings have been renewed almost completely, as is the case also with the standing and running rigging. Navigation electronics onboard Marianna are in a state of the art condition, and the original Perkins 49 hp engine has also been replaced with 31 hp Sole.
Finnish:
S/Y Marianna on Eino Antinojan Inkoossa rakentaman Antilla 36 sarjan tiettävästi yhdeksäs vene kahdestatoista.

We fell in love with the designs of Sparkman & Stephens while sailing our Swan 38-001. We made a deal for our second Swan, Céleste II, in October 2019.
Céleste II is a Swan 57 ketch and a hull number 013. She has an extended transom and the overall length is 59 feet. As far as I know, she was sold first to France, and after that, she has sailed under Finnish and Swedish flags.
Roughly ten years ago, she had a major refit. In the process, teak decks were changed, hull and masts painted, and the interior was fully varnished, engine changed, etc. The previous owner has kept maintaining the excellent condition.
Model: IOR One-Off, Admiral’s Cup racer
Year: 1971
Design: #2057
Builder: Royal Huisman of The Netherlands
Prospect of Whitby (design no. 2057) was originally commissioned by the well-known English sailor Arthur Slater. Arthur Slater ordered in total 6 designs from S&S, typically a new construction every two years with the target to compete in Admiral’s Cup races (which were organized every second year). Five of these boats were called “Prospect of Whitby”.
Mr. Slater was targeting to be a member of the British Admiral’s Cup team of 1971. To be successful, he commissioned his 4thdesign from S&S office, which became the third Prospect of Whitby. In the qualification races, Mr. Slater’s team was performing consistently well, which led Prospect of Whitby to be selected to the UK team as the “big boat”. The British team was captained by Sir Edward “Ted” Heath and his also newly commissioned S&S design “Morning Cloud II”. The third boat in the team was Bob Watson’s “Cervantes IV”, another successful racer coming from the design office of S&S. The English team was victorious and took the cup home, with Prospect of Whitby being the points leader in the team. As Ted Heath was appointed UK prime minister in 1970, the entire UK team got enormous publicity in the English press during the entire event. Since Admiral’s Cup, Mr. Slater took PoW to Australia to compete in the “Southern Cross Cup”, including Sydney-Hobart race. After a more leisurely season of 1972 he sold the boat, in order to focus on creating his next Prospect of Whitby design for 1973 Admiral’s Cup season.
Prospect of Whitby was sold to an English construction business entrepreneur and enthusiastic racing sailor Sir Maurice Laing, who campaigned her as “Loujane” successfully until 1989. She competed for instance in the 1979 Fastnet race. The yacht was granted to “Adventures Offshore” Sea Scouts society, who renamed her “Salex”. The boat sailed under the sea scouts flag until 1998 when she was sold to Mr. Tony Cox. Mr. Cox returned the original name “Prospect of Whitby” and also returned the boat to the racecourses. She received a new rig, racing sails and reached its peak performance in 2001 when PoW won its class in RORC IRC2 ranking series. The boat was briefly under the ownership of James Nimmo until she was sold in 2005 to Hanno Narjus and Hanna Euro.
Prospect of Whitby hull is of aluminium construction, built by Royal Huisman of The Netherlands. The superstructure and accommodation were built by Berthons in England of plywood.
During her Finnish ownership, Prospect of Whitby has been totally rebuilt, including a new deck, new accommodation and 100% renewed equipment. The rebuilding work has been done by Lasse Ristikankare and her owners, with advice from Lars Ström on design and construction details.
Prospect has continued her racing life during current ownership and has won its class in Finnish & Estonian Offshore Week as well as Gotland Runt.

Prospect of Whitbyn (design n:o 2057) tilasi alun perin hyvin tunnettu englantilainen purjehtija Arthur Slater. Hän tilasi elämänsä aikana yhteensä kuusi suunnitelmaa S&S:n toimistolta tyypillisesti joka toinen vuosi tavoitteena osallistua Admiral’s Cup kilpailuihin (jotka siis järjestettiin kahden vuoden välein). Näistä veneistä viisi kantoi nimeä ”Prospect of Whitby”.
Arthur Slaterin tavoitteena oli tulla valituksi Englannin vuoden 1971 Admiral’s Cup joukkueeseen. Varmistaakseen kilpailukykynsä, hän tilasi neljännet suunnitelmat S&S toimistolta, joiden mukaan rakennettiin hänen kolmas Prospect of Whitby veneensä. Karsinnoissa Slaterin tiimi menestyi tasaisen hyvin, minkä tuloksena Prospect of Whitby valittiin Englannin joukkueen isoksi veneeksi. Britannian joukkueen kapteenina toimi Sir Edward ”Ted” Heath sekä hänen S&S uudisrakenne ”Morning Cloud II”. Joukkueen kolmas vene oli Bob Watsonin ”Cervantes IV”, sekin avomerikilpailuissa hyvin menestynyt S&S konstruktio. Britannian joukkue oli menestyksekäs. Se voitti cupin, Prospect of Whitbyn kerätessä suurimman pistepotin. Ted Heath oli vuonna 1970 valittu Britannian pääministerkisi, minkä johdosta koko Englannin joukkue sai huomattavasti julkisuutta paikallisissa medioissa. Admiral’s Cup kisojen jälkeen Slater rahtasi PoWin Australiaan osallistumaan ”Southern Cross Cup” regattaan, mukaanlukien Sydney-Hobart kilpailu. 1972 rennomman kauden jälkeen hän myin veneen, keskittyäkseen teettämään seuraavan Prospect of Whitbyn, tavoitteena jälleen vuoden 1973 Admiral’s Cup kilpailut.
Prospect of Whitby myytiin merkittävälle englantialiselle rakennusalan yrittäjälle ja aktiiviselle kilpapurjehtijalle, Sir Maurice Laingille. Hän kilpaili veneellä ”Loujane” nimen alla vuoteen 1989 saakka. PoW osallistui mm.
Prospect of Whitby runko on rakennettu alumiinista hollantilaisen Royal Huisman veistämön toimesta. Ylärakenteet ja sisustus on rakennettu Englannissa Berthonsin veistämöllä puusta ja vanerista.
Nykyisten omistajien toimesta Prospect of Whitby on rakennettu lähes täysin uudestaan. Veneessä on uusi kansi, sisustus ja tekniikka. Rakentajana on toiminut Lasse Ristikankare ja uudet omistajat, hyödyntäen Lars Strömin konsultaatiota rakenteiden mitoituksessa ja yksityiskohdissa.
Prospect on jatkanut leppoisalla tahdilla kisauraansa nykyisten omistajien toimesta.

Having been used as a charter boat and a live-aboard in recent years, the Sagitta 35 Ugly Duckling made a successful return to IRC racing in 2019 winning both the JOG Offshore Yacht Racing inshore series in class six and the IRC 1 class in the Hamble Classics Regatta. Along the way she also secured two line-honours victories in her two finishes in the JOG Offshore Series.
Purchased by Olly Bewes and George Beevor towards the end of the 2018 series, Ugly Duckling emerged from a winter’s work to win the traditional season opener, JOG Nab Tower Race in March and consolidated that with a second in the Cowes-Yarmouth race in May. Line honours followed in a gale strewn St Vaast Race and again in the Cowes-Alderney race a few weeks later. A fourth win of the season was secured in the Cowes-Weymouth race and a second in Cowes-Poole and a third in the JOG Sersys Inshore Challenge was enough to secure the title.
In between times she took IRC 1 class in the Hamble Classics Regatta which was hosted by the RAF Yacht Club in early September.
“This first year has really exceeded our expectations” said co-owner George. “We knew that she had the potential to be a real weapon against modern boats in long distance racing but we did not think she would come good quite so quickly – I think the height of our ambition for the Nab Tower Race was the top six. It’s offshore where she really came into her own though, sailing downwind in fifty knots on the way to St Vaast she felt safe and stable and really looked after us. She is a remarkable boat”.

PEPPER III designed by legendary Sparkman & Stephens and built by world famous Nautor’s Swan in Finland in 1974. A total of 76 hulls were built. PEPPER III is hull no 65. Most of them are still sailing all over the World. Professionals and skilled sailing enthusiasts fell in love with the model right from the launch in 1972. S&S Swan 44 won the London Boat Show Yacht of the Year award in 1973.
For her first 31 years she sailed in Italy under the name Kratos. In 2006 She was sold to the UK where She sailed under the name Solo. In 2011 she was found in relatively poor but original condition in Southern England. Her current owner sailed her back to his home water in Finland where she has undergone a complete refurbishment. Today PEPPER III is in mint condition and for sure one of the most stunning S&S Swan 44 on Planet. Despite her age and beautiful classic lines, she has an awesome sailing performance and she can be a tough competitor in the race course too! You can spot Her in the Finnish or Swedish archipelago. Homeport is HSS in Helsinki. PEPPER III crew is well known for their team spirit and welcoming hospitality. If the crew is not on board, they are usually hanging at the local bar – together with other nice sailors and people.
Model: Stevens 47
Year: 1981
Design: #2390
Builder: Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Lady Penelope was built in 1981 (hull #16) by Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for Stevens Yachts. She started life as a charter boat and appears to have changed hands at least four times since then until she was purchased by a couple who refitted her in Trinidad and embarked on a charter business in the Pacific en route to Sydney, Australia. She was put on the market in Sydney after her previous owners purchased a catamaran that was better suited to a local charter business and we found her armchair shopping one evening in Hong Kong.
We booked our flights to Sydney, fell in love and took ownership of Lady Penelope, so named because she has a ‘driver’ named Parker. From there, Lady Penelope went to Brisbane for some TLC and updating (her instruments may well have been original and we wanted something from this century for the journey back to Hong Kong).
From Brisbane, she headed north and cleared out of Australia via Cairns. Three challenging days later (which included breaking the steering cable), Lady Penelope cleared into Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to switch crew as our friend could not get an Australia visa. She stopped in Ambon, Indonesia to refuel, crossed the equator and cleared into Cebu, Philippines two and half weeks later. Work called and we left Lady Penelope at the Cebu Yacht Club alongside a big ‘sistership’ - an S&S Swan 65 of similar vintage.
The next chance we could, we sailed her over to Subic Bay, Philippines where she cleared out to head home - Hong Kong. Up to this point, she had been sailed double handed but we opted to go with three for the final leg to Hong Kong knowing what the South China Sea could throw at us. But as these things go, it was a very uneventful trip.
We have had and look forward to many more wonderful adventures on Lady Penelope exploring the islands in Hong Kong and the rest of South East Asia when the world opens up again.
